Sexual Relationships and Incontinence

Incontinence does not cause a major damage to sexuality. However, it does affect the other aspects of life of those who suffer from this condition, jeopardizing their possibilities of having a successful sexual relationship. The changes in life a sufferer of incontinence goes through can greatly impact his or her sexuality. There are many things that can be affected, including self-esteem and dignity. This condition can make the person feel uncomfortable around others including loved ones and when it comes to having sexual relationships, things can get difficult if the person does not know how to handle the situation.

Let it off your chest! It is of utmost importance to be honest and establish good communication with your partner as well as to explain whatever makes you feel uncomfortable. It is understandable that you might face fear and/or shame to tell your significant other about your situation. It is more relieving to explain that there might be some urine leakage during sex, which most likely won’t be noticeable since there are body fluids involved during intercourse. Whether urine dribbles during sexual intercourse or not, it shouldn’t inhibit you from enjoying a healthy relationship with your partner. Take things easy and don’t let this condition ruin the intimacy which is an important part of a couple’s life. Most times, the response from your partner will be an understanding and loving one.

Remember, that being intimate with your significant other is an essential aspect in a relationship, which keeps a couple together through thick and thin.

Other important and helpful guidelines to follow are the following:

  • Communication is the foundation in every relationship. Don’t be afraid to talk to your partner about what makes you more comfortable while having intercourse, for example: different sex positions to avoid putting too much stress on the bladder.
  • Try not to drink too much liquid and empty your bladder or bowel before having sexual intercourse. Sometimes, it is worth pausing for a while and using the restroom if needed.
  • If protecting the bed by covering it with bed pads or stay-dry bed linen gives you peace of mind, then do not hesitate to do so.

Last but not the least, do not let insignificant details, like getting the furnishings wet, put a damper on your relationship. If carefully planning that special moment and putting a cover on the furniture makes you feel more comfortable and confident, then go ahead and do so.

By following all these guidelines and most importantly, by being honest with the person you share your life with, your self-esteem and confidence will get a boost as well as the relationship itself.
